On this, the anniversary weekend of the Notorious BIG’s death I couldn’t help but wonder as I watched and listened to all of the tributes given to this incredible Artist if he and Tupac were still alive today how different hip hop would be? The beef between these two hip hop titans is well documented, and while the circumstances of their untimely deaths remain in dispute, there is no dispute about the legend of their music.
So I ask this question: Tupac vs Biggie, who is the best? Some of it depends on where you live, and then some of it depends on the style of hip hop you love. Is it Biggie, who’s masterful story-telling abilities still inspire every hip hop head today, or Tupac whose passion, Makavelian ora and rapid-fire delivery shocked the world with political songs as well as just records for the streets?
While both were originally born and raised on the East Coast, Tupac moved out west to complete 3 albums under the Death Row imprint. Their production styles contrasted, Biggie’s music many times was inspired by legendary samples and had a very hip hop edge to it. Then at times he paired a very rnb sounding track to lyrical perfection. Tupac, inspired by the production of Dr. Dre and Daz found a winning combination of hard hitting beats with a splash of live instruments played on top propelling him to sell diamond (10 million sold) on All Eyez on Me.
We at P5Audio are in the process of producing and releasing products that honor both of these greats, the Thug Angel’s Drum Loops product in honor of Tupac and the Notorious construction loop set product in honor of Biggie. As I listened to hit after hit from these kings in preparation of producing these products, I couldn’t help but be overwhelmed at how incredible these Artists truly are. I started asking myself the very question I am now asking in this blog…..who is the best?
